Boxing is fun to watch.
A bunch of us went to see the New England Regional Golden Gloves Championship last night in Lowell. We saw 12 different 3-round fights; they ranged from the 112 lb Women's Finals all the way to the Men's Super Heavyweight division. All the boxers wear headgear so nobody gets really beat up, but we did see a KO in the Men's Heavyweight class. I think the 2 women we saw fight was the best match of the night. They were going at each other like Tasmanian devils. They crowd gave them a standing ovation.
I wondered what the crowd was going to be like for this event, I'd never been to a boxing match before. The fights I have seen on TV always showed guys in white minks and $5000 suits, flashy bling, and fancy model-types hanging out in the crowd.
This was not the scene in Lowell.
I had my shirt tucked in so I think I was over-dressed. My friend Alex who was wearing a hooded zipper sweatshirt and his beanie winter hat looked the part.
We're definitely going back next year.

I was watching the Westminster Kennel Club dog show on TV last night.
I noticed that most of the dogs have been given 10-foot long names like: "Lawrence of Arabia Jiffy Lube Peanut Butter Sandwich".
What's up with that?

NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS
2004 SUPER BOWL CHAMPIONS
(AGAIN!)
Man, we are so spoiled in this town. 3 championships in one calendar year? Unreal.

The lastest issue of Sports Illustrated has a story that ranks the top 25 sports bars in America.
The #1 spot goes to a sports bar that I've been to many times, The Four's, which is right outside the Fleet Center on Canal Street in Boston. I think I read somewhere it used to be called The Number Four's (after legendary Bruins defenseman, #4, Bobby Orr) but for some reason they shortened it to just The Four's.
The bar is like a sports museum, they've got all kinds of Boston sports memorabilia hanging from every nook and cranny. It mainly caters to the yuppie crowd, it has lots of shiny brass and dark wood trim, especially in the seating area on the restaurant side of the place. It's a good place to go after games for food/drinks. Given the current state of the NHL it should come as no surprise that I haven't been to The Four's once this year.
But when I think of sports bars in Boston, I think of one place: Sullivan's Tap. It's a blue-collar joint that has cheap beer specials, a couple of pool tables, a couple of TVs, and a bar that runs practically the whole length of the narrow building.
That is the place to go after Bruins playoff games. Gee, I haven't been to Sullivan's Tap once this year either.
Sully's happens to be located right next door to The Four's.
